How To Request a DOT PIN (With Video Tutorial)

Man using a laptop
A DOT PIN is how you log into DOT’s systems to:

  • Make changes to your DOT Number
  • Request additional info
  • See your CSA score

While there are currently two types of PINs your company may have, one connected to your DOT Number and one connected to your MC Number, the FMCSA is now working toward consolidating these two numbers into one number. When you request a new PIN, you can also request they be made the same. Watch this video to learn how!

How To Request Your DOT PIN by Mail

Requesting a DOT PIN is very easy and can be done in less than five minutes. While everything we cover is in the video, here are the steps you can follow.

1. Go to: https://www.safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/

There are a lot of companies out there that may try to pose themselves as the FMCSA, so make sure you’re going to the official site.

2. Choose the option “Click here to request a USDOT Number PIN be mailed to the address on file.

If you want to make your DOT PIN and MC Number PIN the same, you need to select this option, as you won’t have the opportunity to request they be made the same via email.

3. Click “Yes” on the next screen.

This screen verifies the reason you are requesting a replacement or new PIN. Some of the reasons listed on the site are:

  • You need a new PIN
  • Your PIN has been compromised, stolen, or taken
  • You forgot or lost your current PIN

4. Fill out the information on the top half of the screen

The only information you’ll need to submit to the FMCSA is:

  • Your DOT Number
  • Your name as the company official authorized to request your PIN
  • Your title in the company

How To Request Your DOT PIN by Email

The process to get your DOT PIN by email is almost the same as the first step, although, there are a few other pieces of information you’ll need to provide.

1. Go to: https://www.safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/

2. Hit “Click here to request a USDOT Number PIN be emailed.”

3. Choose “Request current USDOT Number PIN”

Unless your PIN has been compromised, you can often just request a copy of your current PIN instead of resetting it.

4. Fill out the form

This form is a little more extensive than requesting it by mail. You’ll need your:

  • USDOT Number
  • US Federal ID (such as your EIN or SSN)
  • Company name
  • Name of the person requesting the PIN
  • The official title of that person’s role in your company

5. Verify Your Email Address

The email address it will provide is based on what you provided when you applied for your DOT Number. They’ll send you an email with a verification code that is only valid for 30 minutes. From there, you should receive an email within five minutes that includes your DOT PIN.
