What is the FMCSA?
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulates the trucking industry and commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). The FMCSA’s mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that happen with large trucks and buses.
Trucking companies need to follow regulations put in place by the FMCSA in order to avoid fines and legally keep their trucks on the road. It can be confusing and frustrating to sort through all the regulations set by the FMCSA, and that’s where Motor Carrier HQ comes in.

How Do FMCSA Regulations Affect Your New Trucking Company?
If you’re thinking about starting your own trucking company, we offer a variety of resources to get you started! Check out our free guide that goes through each step of starting your own trucking company! It lists what you need to get your new company started and more. If you are ready take the next step, you may need to do these things before you even get your first truck on the road:
Obtain Your USDOT Number
If your company is planning on hauling goods on a for-hire basis in interstate commerce, you must be registered with the FMCSA and have a USDOT Number.
Get Your Operating Authority (MC Number)
Your MC Number is tied to your USDOT number, and it’s an important part of getting your motor carrier authority. The FMCSA requires a $300 filing fee to get your authority and you may need to register under the Unified Registration System (URS). You can order your operating authority online from us for just $499.
Pass a New Entrant Safety Audit
Once you start your new trucking company, you must pass a New Entrant Safety Audit within the first 12 months of starting your company. This audit verifies with the FMCSA that your company is properly following safety regulations. Motor Carrier HQ offers a DOT Audit Assistance Package that makes this step easy.
I’ve Already Registered With the FMCSA. What’s Next?
If you’ve already registered your trucking company, then the next step is to keep your business compliant with the FMCSA. Some regulations you must consider for your company include:
- Hours of Service (HOS) Regulations
- Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
- Drug and Alcohol Testing
The trucking industry is heavily regulated, so it’s not enough to register your new business and assume that your company is officially compliant. The laws and rules you need to follow change all the time, so let us help you keep your company on the road.
